October 2025

It's been almost six weeks since we've been appointed as Commissioners at the Town of Port Hedland, and we've been busy out in the community - listening, connecting and learning.

We’ve conducted our first Ordinary Council Meeting, and we were able to hear from a range of community members at the start of the meeting who shared their views openly with us. We encourage open and transparent dialogue.

We've had the pleasure of meeting with important volunteer organisations such as the Port Hedland Marine Rescue, the BMX Club, and Care for Hedland, as well as meeting the team at Pilbara Ports. These organisations, in different ways, all play vital roles in the Hedland community.

Over the next few months, we will continue to engage with the people of Hedland, listening carefully to different perspectives, and inviting the community to work with us to help shape a stronger and sustainable future for local government.

Our focus is on providing stability now and preparing the ground for the next elected Council, with a special election scheduled for 28 March 2026.

We will do this with a strong focus on the core business of local government, delivering the services and infrastructure the Town needs, ensuring effective governance, and supporting the future Council to make well-informed decisions.

We encourage all residents to stay involved, to share your views, and to participate fully in the life of your local government.

Hedland youth make their way to Parliament

The Hedland Youth Advisory Council made a powerful submission to the Australian Parliament for the 'Raise Our Voice' campaign. Heidi will represent the group in a few weeks, presenting challenges faced by young people in the Durak area such as access to affordable housing.

Port Hedland on the volleyball map

This achievement is especially significant given the association’s short history, having been established just three years ago. The Town’s Community Champions Grant program is designed to support local organisations in reaching new heights, and this is a shining example of its impact.

Iconic waterfront venue opens up tender

The cherished waterfront venue has recently received a $2.1 million investment in refurbishment works from the Town, putting the iconic venue in a prime position while ensuring long-term viability. The Town is now seeking a reputable hospitality operator with proven experience.

Measles alert for the Pilbara region

A measles outbreak has been confirmed in the Pilbara region, with Port Hedland and Karratha identified as key areas of concern.

WA Health has issued a public alert urging residents and travellers to remain vigilant as measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through airborne droplets and can remain infectious in the air for up to 30 minutes after an infected person has left a room.

Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a distinctive red rash that usually begins on the face and spreads. WA Health advises anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms between 7 to 18 days after potential contact.

Those who are not immune - either through vaccination or previous infection - are especially vulnerable.

The Town of Port Hedland is sharing this important public health information on behalf of the WA Department of Health. More information can be found here
