Sport plays such an important role in connecting people, particularly given our remoteness and transient population.

Peter Carter, Town of Port Hedland Mayor

Mayor Peter Carter

Good afternoon,

In a small and remote community like Hedland, sport plays such a critical role in our social fabric.

It is not only a way for people to keep active and healthy, but given the transient nature of our population, joining a sporting team or association is a great way for new people in Hedland to meet and make new friends.

The annual Town of Port Hedland and BHP Community Sports Awards were held on Friday evening, celebrating local talent, ambition and the contribution of individuals and groups over the past 12 months.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees - and a special thank you to all the coaches, umpires and volunteers who give up their time to ensure the success of sporting clubs.

I would also like to note, the Town of Port Hedland has received the resignation of Cr David Eckhart, who has publicly shared his intention to leave Port Hedland to relocate to Perth.

It is a commitment to run for Council and to hold the role of an Elected Member, I would like to acknowledge Cr Eckhart’s contribution. His relocation leaves a position open and the next steps around filling this position are being determined. This is likely to include a by-election but more information will be made available to the community soon.

Peter.

Boat ramp pontoons installed at marina

All 52 pontoons have been installed at the Spoilbank Marina boat ramp.

Each pontoon is a reinforced concrete shell cast around a solid foam block, weighing several tonnes. The weight means the pontoons are very sturdy underfoot, yet they have no trouble rising and falling with the tide.

The next step is completing the finer details of the ramp, including fitting rubber fenders, mooring cleats and pile guides.

Please note, the Spoilbank Marina is still an active construction site and not yet ready for public use.

The $187.5 million Spoilbank Marina is being managed by Pilbara Ports, and is funded by the State Government, Town of Port Hedland and BHP

Ranger Review

The Flatback turtle season started in October and unfortunately, we have already been notified about people driving on the beaches and extremely close to turtle nests. Pictured above is evidence from quad-bike tracks around a marked turtle nest at Pretty Pool.

We are so lucky to have such an important breeding ground for the endangered flatback turtles right on our doorstep, so we need your help to protect our precious turtle population. There is also a lot of ‘behind-the-scenes’ work that volunteer environmental organisation, Care for Hedland does all year round, so let’s respect their hard work and commitment to turtle protection.

Driving on the beach during turtle season is irresponsible, completely unacceptable and - against the law. If you catch someone doing the wrong thing, please let us know so we can impose significant fines, the impounding of their vehicle, or prosecution. If you see someone doing the wrong thing, please report it: 9158 9300
