"The newly announced partnership with Port Hedland International Airport will hopefully see the return of Bali flights in early 2024"

Peter Carter, Town of Port Hedland Mayor

Mayor Peter Carter

With events season coming to a close, there is still lots happening around Hedland.

The much anticipated re-opening of the upgraded Wanangkura Stadium gym is scheduled for Monday 18 September, with new equipment and fit-outs for the community to enjoy.

At the August council meeting, councillors endorsed a partnership between the Town and Port Hedland International Airport, to help support the return of flights to Brisbane and Bali. It's great to hear Qantas is returning a direct flight to Brisbane from November. One of the Town's goals is to improve liveability and having better connectivity is important for both economic and social reasons.

Lastly, we have started preparing for cyclone season by completing our annual green-waste kerbside collection. A big thanks to the community for doing the right thing for a safe cyclone season ahead.

Spoilbank Marina public jetty installed

The project hit another big milestone recently, when the public jetty was installed in the marina basin.

The two-platform jetty has been designed to account for Port Hedland’s fluctuating tides. The top level is wheelchair friendly and includes lowered handrail sections, so kids and people of all abilities can fish from the jetty. There are also six artificial reef balls under the jetty to create an inviting habitat for fish.

Please note, the Spoilbank Marina is still an active construction site, and the jetty is not yet available for public use.

The $187.5 million Spoilbank Marina is being managed by Pilbara Ports, and is funded by the State Government, Town of Port Hedland and BHP

Ranger Review

  • Feral cat populations in WA are skyrocketing and the damage these uncontrolled animals do to native species is extreme.
  • Responsible pet ownership is not just about caring for the pets you have at home, but also includes notifying Rangers when you see feral cats and ensuring that you do not feed or provide harbourage for feral cats.
  • Feeding and shelter for feral animals promotes breeding, which increases their numbers and the damage they do to the environment.
  • Please notify rangers when you see feral cats in your area and take advantage of the Town of Port Hedland’s FREE cat trapping program. Traps will be delivered and collected upon successfully trapping of a feral cat and all you are required to do is monitor the trap to ensure that if an animal is trapped the rangers are notified immediately to remove it.
  • Do your bit to lower the feral cat numbers in Port Hedland and protect native wildlife.
