As we move through another busy month in Hedland, it’s pleasing to see the many ways our community continues to come together, support one another and contribute to making our town a vibrant and welcoming place to live. 

The recent Ship to Shore Community Fun Run was a fantastic example of this, attracting more than 1,000 participants from across the region. Whether running, walking or cheering from the sidelines, residents embraced the opportunity to get active, connect with friends and neighbours, and enjoy a great community event. 

Initiatives like Ship to Shore not only promote health and wellbeing but also contribute to the liveability of our town by creating opportunities for people to connect and strengthen community ties. 

I am also pleased to welcome the State Government’s recent funding commitment towards the Town's Key Worker Housing project. Access to housing remains one of the most significant challenges facing regional communities, and this investment is an important step towards attracting and retaining the workers who provide essential services and support our local economy. 

Working in partnership to deliver practical housing affordability solutions is critical to Hedland’s continued growth and long-term sustainability. 

With cyclone season approaching, I encourage residents to start preparing now and take advantage of the upcoming green waste collection program. Clearing excess vegetation and green waste around your property is a simple but effective way to reduce potential hazards and improve safety during severe weather events. Taking small steps now can help ensure our community is better prepared when the season arrives. 

Council remains focused on delivering initiatives that enhance liveability, support sustainable growth and strengthen our community. By continuing to work together, we can ensure Hedland remains a resilient, connected and thriving place for current and future generations.

Looking to start your career or take it in a new direction? 

Applications for the Town of Port Hedland’s 2027 Shape Your Future traineeship program open on 7 September, offering local residents the opportunities to earn while you learn and build a stable and rewarding career in local government. 

Traineeships will be available across Waste Services, Horticulture, Community Services, Governance and Human Resources. 

Successful applicants will receive paid employment while gaining practical, hands-on workplace experience and working towards a nationally recognised qualification. 

Trainees will also receive ongoing support, coaching and mentoring from experienced Town employees, helping them develop valuable skills, confidence and experience for their future career. 

Whether you are interested in practical outdoor work, supporting your community or developing professional skills in a corporate environment, the Shape Your Future program offers a range of pathways to get your career started.
