As we move through another busy and exciting month in Hedland, I continue to be inspired by the strong sense of community that makes our town such a special place to live, work and raise a family.

Earlier this month, our community came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week, recognising the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an important opportunity to reflect, learn and celebrate the enduring contributions of First Nations people, and I thank everyone who participated in the many events held across our town.

That same community spirit was on full display at the recent Spinifex Spree Carnival, where thousands of residents and visitors gathered to enjoy a weekend of entertainment, connection and celebration. Events like Spinifex Spree showcase the very best of Hedland, bringing people together, creating lasting memories and strengthening the connections that make our community so vibrant and welcoming.

Looking ahead, I encourage everyone to get involved in the upcoming Ship to Shore Community Fun Run next month. Whether you're a seasoned runner, a casual walker or simply there to cheer from the sidelines, it's a fantastic opportunity to embrace an active lifestyle while connecting with friends, family and local service providers.

Council remains focused on delivering meaningful outcomes for our community, supported by strong partnerships and informed by local voices. By continuing to work together, we are ensuring Hedland remains a vibrant, connected and forward-looking place to live.

This collaborative approach will be particularly important as we prepare for the upcoming Australian Census. Census data plays a critical role in helping governments and organisations understand the needs of our community, informing future planning, funding and services.

Every response helps build a more accurate picture of Hedland and the wider Pilbara, strengthening our ability to advocate for the infrastructure, programs and investment our region needs to thrive. When the time comes, I encourage everyone to take part and ensure your voice is counted.

Town commences intensive fogging schedule 

The Town is aware that many residents have noticed an increase in mosquito activity in recent weeks. Seasonal and environmental conditions have created ideal breeding conditions, resulting in higher mosquito numbers than usual. To help reduce mosquito populations, the Town's Environmental Health team is continuing its mosquito fogging program as a priority with weekly fogging operations.

Residents are advised that fogging operations are heavily influenced by weather conditions, particularly wind. As wind direction and strength determine how the fog disperses and can vary significantly within urban areas and from day to day, it is not practical to predetermine an exact treatment route. As a result, routes and schedules may need to be adjusted to ensure fogging is delivered effectively and achieves the best possible coverage. More information here.
