How sentinel chickens help protect the Hedland community

Across nearly every region of WA there are flocks of chickens who provide incredible intelligence on the presence of mosquito vector borne diseases. Due to their constant exposure to the outside environment, sentinel chickens are exposed to mosquito populations 24/7. Fortunately, due to their biology, the chickens are resistant to any of the diseases carried by mozzies, but the antibodies become present in their blood stream. By taking blood samples from these chickens, the Department of Health is able to identify these diseases through early detection.

The Department of Health is warning Pilbara and Kimberley residents to take additional precautions to avoid mosquito bites following these continued detections, such as Flavivirus and Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE)

Cover up

Use mosquito repellent

Try and avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk when mozzies are most active

Wear long, light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing - especially young children and babies

Ensure your insect screens are secure both at home and if you have a caravan
Remove pooled water around your home

In response to the surge of mosquito numbers in Hedland, the Town has purchased sachets of Coopex, an effective residual pesticide, to support residents in managing mosquitoes around their homes. More information here.
