February 2025

I hope everyone is safe and doing well following the recent crossing of Tropical Cyclone Zelia.

While Hedland was fortunate to escape the worst of the storm, our thoughts are with our local communities that faced significant impacts.

A big thank you goes out to our community, volunteers, local businesses and staff, emergency services, and essential workers for their incredible efforts before, during, and after the cyclone.

In a strong show of commitment to environmental sustainability, BHP has kindly donated $100,000 to the Town of Port Hedland to support tree replenishment efforts following Tropical Cyclone Zelia.

You can read more about that here.

Fight the Bite against mosquitos and Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE)

Following the first reported human case of Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) in WA this season, the WA Department of Health is reminding residents and travellers in the Pilbara region to take extra precautions against mosquito bites.

With the flooding and recent rain across the Pilbara region due to ex-Cyclone Zelia, there is already an increase of mosquito activity.

MVE is rare but can be a potentially fatal disease—these simple steps can help keep you and your family safe:

Cover up

Try and avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk when mozzies are most active

Wear long, light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing - especially young children and babies

Ensure your insect screens are secure both at home and if you have a caravan
Use mosquito repellent
Remove pooled water around your home

In response to the surge of mosquito numbers in Hedland, the Town has purchased sachets of Coopex, an effective residual pesticide, to support residents in managing mosquitoes around their homes. More information here.

Shape the future of Hedland’s arts & culture!

The Town is taking a fresh look at how we deliver major events.

Following a Council decision in November 2024, Odyssea Music & Arts Journey will be paused in 2025 as we re-evaluate the community’s needs.

So what does that mean? We want to hear from YOU, because your voice matters in helping create an even more liveable and loveable Hedland!

Join us at our pop-up events to engage with onsite activities and enjoy a sweet treat on us...

  • Port Hedland Boulevard | Wednesday 5 March | 8:00am - 12:00pm

  • South Hedland Square | Thursday 6 March | 2:00pm - 6:00pm

The Local Housing Strategy survey is NOW OPEN!

The Town is developing a Local Housing Strategy in partnership with the Pilbara Development Commission to provide a series of actions that facilitate and promote affordable and sustainable housing in the community.

We know that housing is a handbrake on Hedland's future, and lack of housing is crippling our ability to prosper. The Town of Port Hedland is committed to helping solve the housing issue, alongside other key players.

We need to check we're heading in the right direction, so we're asking for 10 minutes of your time to ensure we've got it right. We're calling on our community to complete a survey that will confirm the crux of the issue - beyond a simple lack of housing.

For more information and to participate in the survey, please click here! Survey closes 2 March.
