It has been another busy and productive month for Council, with strong momentum across key projects, regional collaboration and community initiatives that continue to support Hedland’s growth and liveability.

Across the organisation, there remains a clear and shared commitment to delivering on our priorities while continuing to listen to our community. The insights, feedback and lived experiences of our residents play an essential role in shaping the work we do. 

It has been particularly pleasing to see the number of events bringing people together across Hedland this past month. From community-led activities to larger gatherings, these opportunities to connect reflect the strong spirit that defines our town. 

A significant highlight this month has been the announcement from BHP of a major funding commitment through the Resources Community Investment Initiative. With around $160 million set to be invested in Hedland, this represents an important step forward for our community, with a focus on education, recreation, liveability and long-term growth. 

Importantly, this includes $20 million secured for a new aquatic's facility, a long-standing priority for our community. This project will play a vital role in supporting families, enhancing liveability and helping us continue to attract and retain residents in Hedland. 

We also welcome BHP’s investment into Hedland Senior High School, including upgrades to design and technology facilities. Access to strong education pathways is critical in supporting families, growing our local workforce and building a resilient community for the future. This is a positive step forward and one that will deliver long-term benefits. 

I was also pleased to see the success of the recent Care for Hedland Sustainable Living Show, held at Gratwick Hall and Civic Gardens. The event highlighted practical approaches to sustainable living in the Pilbara and provided a great opportunity for the community to engage with local initiatives. A standout moment was the visit from Costa Georgiadis, whose energy and practical advice resonated with attendees of all ages. 

As we move ahead, Council remains focused on delivering meaningful outcomes for our community, supported by strong partnerships and informed by local voices. By continuing to work together, we are ensuring Hedland remains a vibrant, connected and forward-looking place to live. 

WA community warned to protect against mosquito bites following fatality

WA Health has reported that an adult who contracted Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) has sadly died. It’s likely the person was recently exposed to infected mosquitoes while travelling in the West Kimberley region. Department of Health surveillance programs continue to detect MVE activity across the Kimberley and Pilbara regions, indicating the risk is still current in northern WA.

Cover up:

• Wear long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing.
• Dress children appropriately (including protecting feet) and use pram netting.
• Ensure insect screens are installed and in good condition on houses and caravans.
• Use mosquito nets and mosquito-proof tents if sleeping outside.

Repel:

• Apply an effective personal mosquito repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET), picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (also known as PMD) evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the label instructions.
• Do not confuse Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus with eucalyptus oil and other botanicals that do not provide sufficient protection.

Clean up:

• Keep grass and other vegetation short to help prevent mosquitoes around your home.
• Empty or remove water holding containers around your home.
