November 2025

We are committed to delivering stable, community-focused leadership for Hedland and maintaining momentum on projects that matter to you. Your feedback, ideas and advocacy continue to guide our work.

One of the highlights of the October Ordinary Council Meeting was our decision to invite tenders for the construction of the JD Hardie Adventure Park, the next stage of the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub masterplan. This project has enjoyed strong support and enthusiastic engagement from the community, and we want to thank everyone who took the time to share their views. The adventure park will include BMX pump and jump tracks and a parkour area, creating a fantastic new recreational space for young people and families across Hedland.

We also endorsed the recruitment committee for the Town’s next Chief Executive Officer. Recruiting a permanent CEO is now our top priority. The committee will include all three Town Commissioners and independent member Terry Hill. Mr Hill, the current Chair and former CEO of the Pilbara Development Commission, brings deep local knowledge and valuable experience. Appointing a permanent CEO will provide stability and clear leadership as we continue to deliver for the community and prepare for the return of an elected Council.

At the October meeting we also adopted the Public Open Space and Street Tree Strategy. This strategy will guide how we plan, maintain and improve our parks, gardens, ovals, playgrounds and the foreshore. Well maintained and accessible public spaces strengthen community connections and support liveability right across Hedland.

Late last month, the Town of Port Hedland had the honour of being represented at the launch of NUSHIP Pilbara in Perth. The new offshore patrol vessel will have its ceremonial home port in Port Hedland and the Mayor of Port Hedland will serve as the ship’s long-term sponsor. Representatives from the Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation attended the ceremony, and water collected on Kariyarra Country was used during the launch to create a powerful cultural connection to the Pilbara. Commissioners Shaw and Aldridge were pleased to attend on behalf of the Town.

As we move towards the 28 March local government election, we encourage all community members to stay engaged. We are out in the community meeting with residents, groups and businesses to understand your priorities. Voting is the most direct way to shape Hedland’s future, and we encourage all eligible voters to consider your choices carefully.

Change is in your hands.

Australian Food Safety Week | 8-15 November

Earlier this month, we recognised National Food Safety Week, and with temperatures soaring in the Pilbara and the recent power outage fresh in mind - it's a timely reminder food safety is more important than ever.

High heat and loss of refrigeration can quickly lead to food spoilage, increasing the risk of foodborne illness. Taking a few precautions can help keep your family safe.

If you experience a power outage, keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible.

A full freezer can stay cold for up to 48 hours, while a fridge will keep food safe for about 4 hours. After that, perishable items such as meat, dairy, and seafood should be discarded if they’ve been above 5°C for more than two hours.

When in doubt, throw it out - eating spoiled food can cause serious illness.

16 Days in WA

16 Days in WA is an annual campaign running from 25 November to 10 December, dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring meaningful conversations about gender-based violence.

This year’s theme, “Stopping Family and Domestic Violence: Play Your Part,” encourages everyone to take action by challenging harmful behaviours and attitudes within our communities.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 1 in 4 women (23%) have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a partner since the age of 15 - a statistic that underscores the seriousness and deeply concerning nature of this issue.

To show support and drive change, The Town invites the community to connect, listen, learn, and participate in a variety of free events throughout the week. More information below.
