As we move into spring and look ahead to another busy period for our community, Council remains focused on delivering practical outcomes that support local residents, strengthen liveability and plan for Hedland’s future growth.
One of the Town’s highest advocacy priorities continues to be housing. Last month, we welcomed Housing and Works Minister John Carey MLA and Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel MLA to Hedland as part of the Pilbara Housing Roadshow. The visit provided an important opportunity to discuss ways to increase housing supply, unlock future development and collectively address one of the most significant challenges facing our region.
Access to affordable and available housing is essential to attracting and retaining key workers, supporting local businesses and ensuring our community can continue to grow and thrive.
I also want to acknowledge the concern, sadness and discussion that the situation at Frisby Court has generated across our community in recent weeks. While there are differing views about the causes and solutions, I believe most people share a common concern for the wellbeing of the children and families involved.
The issues highlighted are complex and cannot be resolved by any single organisation or level of government alone. Council will continue to advocate, participate in discussions and work collaboratively with government agencies, service providers and community stakeholders to support better outcomes for those affected.
I am pleased to share that Council has now adopted the Town’s 2026-27 Annual Budget. The budget maintains a 0% increase to residential rates while delivering significant investment across our community, including $107 million towards key worker housing, community facilities, roads and essential infrastructure projects.
Importantly, the budget also includes more than $800,000 in grants and rate concessions to support local community groups, sporting clubs and local businesses. These organisations play a vital role in bringing our community together, creating opportunities for participation and helping make Hedland a great place to live.
Residents are also reminded that pet registrations and renewals are moving online, making it easier and more convenient to manage your pet registration. I encourage pet owners to keep an eye on Town communications for further information and to ensure their details remain up to date.
By continuing to work together and investing in the future, we can ensure Hedland remains a vibrant, resilient and welcoming place for current and future generations.
Thank you for your ongoing support and contribution to our community. Together, we are building a strong future for Hedland. |
