MARCH, 2024

I would encourage everyone to have their

say on public health in Hedland to help us

advocate for improved services

Peter Carter, Town of Port Hedland Mayor

Mayor Peter Carter

It has been a busy month in Hedland with the by-election having just been conducted, with Adrian McRae being elected to Council to replace David Eckhart. I would like to offer my congratulations to Mr McRae and I look forward to working with him on Council as we continue to strive to improve liveability in Hedland.

The Town has just released a new survey to help inform the development of a Public Health Plan. The survey will provide the Town with important data about the gaps, needs and health issues for the Hedland community. The Public Health Plan will be an important strategic document for the Town to advocate for improved health services. You can access more information here.

Finally, congratulations to everyone involved with the 2023 Hedland Street Art Festival, which recently won an international award. The festival, which was part of the Welcome to Hedland event, was a community-driven initiative which featured the painting of 14 wonderful murals in the South Hedland town square.

Dog safety tips for a safer community

  • Make sure your backyard is fenced and sealed. Check for any areas where dogs may be able to dig their way out or climb onto something to jump out. Make sure gates and doors are locked.
  • Have your dog registered with the Town. If your dog happens to leave your home, and someone finds them - we can look up our system and get in contact with you to return them safely.
  • Reporting and addressing aggressive behaviour or escaped dogs to our Rangers can promptly prevent future incidents. Call the Rangers on 9158 9300.
  • Make sure your dog is on a leash when you’re walking them – unless an area specifically states ‘off-leash’.
  • Failing to have your dog on a leash can incur a penalty of $200 and these penalties can increase substantially if an unleashed dog attacks another animal or person.

Projects Propelling Hedland

The Town of Port Hedland is preparing for construction of the iconic South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub to start in 2024.

The Town has marked two key milestones in Stage 1 of the project;

  • The development application for construction work has been lodged, and is now available for public feedback.
  • A tender for contractors to undertake bulk earthworks has been issued, closing on 4 April 2024.

Stage 1 involves relocating Kevin Scott Oval, to the Western End of Wanangkura Stadium, as well as a new AFL standard oval. There will be supporting amenities including spectator seating, carparking and landscaping.

The first stage also includes construction of a new multi-user sporting pavilion with changerooms, clubrooms, function facilities and umpire and tournament rooms. This work will be contracted through a second tender issued later in the year.

Further information on the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub is available here.

Are you satisfied with Hedland’s health services and facilities?

Let us know so we can advocate for Hedland and our community!

The Town of Port Hedland recognises good health and wellbeing are essential to creating a vibrant and resilient community – which is why we are developing a Public Health Plan.

To develop this plan, we need your input. We're asking residents to fill out a survey so we can determine the key health priorities for our community.

Have your say about health services in Hedland to help shape this plan.

You can access the survey here

Please note, the survey will close on Friday 5 April.
