The new year is upon us, and it promises to be another busy one for the Town of Port Hedland.

Another milestone for the transformative Spoilbank Marina redevelopment will be reached on Saturday, 20 January, with the official opening of the new boat ramp.

The Town of Port Hedland has contributed $37 million towards the $187.5 million project which, when completed, will really bring the foreshore area to life.

Details on the official opening of the boat ramp are below, so make sure you get up nice and early and get down there!

The Town of Port Hedland also has a couple of huge events planned over the summer period for the community to enjoy with the Always Good Nights Hedland music shows at various venues starting later this month, as well as the Perth Festival movies at Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema next month.

Spoilbank Marina boat ramp to open

The public boat ramp facility and car park area at the Spoilbank Marina will officially open to the public at 6am on Saturday 20 January.

To celebrate this milestone, the Hedland community are invited to set their alarms to come and watch the first boat launch.

There will be a coffee van down there with free coffee and water, and the first 50 people to show up will get a limited-edition Spoilbank Marina gift bag!

The $187.5 million Spoilbank Marina is being managed by Pilbara Ports, and is funded by the State Government, Town of Port Hedland and BHP

Travelling during bushfire season. Simple, but lifesaving tips: 

If you are travelling or staying near bushland this summer, bushfires may be a real risk to you and your safety. 

It's important to have a plan in place if a bushfire impacts the area. Bushfires are dangerous and can be unpredictable, and should be avoided at all costs. 

Leaving before a fire threatens is the safest option. Bushfires can happen suddenly and change quickly, so if you believe you are in danger act immediately to stay safe.

1. Create a bushfire plan for your travels

3. Know the bushfire warning system
4. Know the current fire danger rating for the area you are travelling to
5. Check if there is a total fire ban in the area you are travelling to
6. Be prepared to change your travel plans
7. Know where to get the latest bushfire information

Projects Propelling Hedland

The Town of Port Hedland has been developing a network of shared paths that support walking and cycling throughout our community.  

At the December Ordinary Council Meeting, the Town's new Active Transport Strategy was endorsed. This strategy is the Town's blueprint for future investment into the active transport network that includes footpaths, shared paths and pedestrian access ways in Hedland.

Over the last five years, the Town has built seven kilometres of shared paths. In November 2023 we celebrated the completion of the Wilson Street Shared Path which has, for the first time, connected Port and South Hedland with a walking and cycling path. 

Cooke Point is a popular area for active recreation, but lacks a connected shared walking and cycling path.  The Cooke Point Shared Path project aims to connect the existing gaps to provide a shared path right along the Port Hedland foreshore.

The Town received $650,000 State Government funding as a contribution for design and construction of a shared path in Cooke Point.  

Design is underway for the path and construction is expected to start in the first half of 2024.
